Hello Neighbor review

Hello Neighbor is a could-be-fun horror video game where you control a young suburban boy who’s trying to sneak into his creepy neighbor’s house. You’re on a mission to find out what is hidden in this weirdo’s basement. Stolen stuff? A kidnapped child? A dead body? Hello Neighbor was developed and released in 2018. The game is available on PC, as well as on most mobile devices.

Hello Neighbor boasts DreamWorks-style and even a bit Tim Burton-ish impressive visuals. The graphics are not the most outstanding thing you’ve ever seen, but they’re good enough to seamlessly morph with the game’s suspense-inducing plot. Even though Hello Neighbor is a horror title, the gameplay is not filled with blood and gore, so it’s rather family-friendly.

The gameplay is focused on the cat-and-mouse type of fun where your only task is to break into your neighbor’s huge house and find out what he’s up to. One of the most discouraging things about the gameplay is that if your supposedly criminal neighbor catches you, you have to start the mission all over again. The creepy guy has cameras set up all around the neighborhood. Therefore, you also have to fight with an AI that will learn your behaviour patterns throughout the game and then predict your actions.

Another frustrating thing about the Hello Neighbor gameplay is that the game grabs you by the hand without even providing any introductory tutorial on what to do. As a result, you learn the mechanics on the go, and you don’t have the possibility to save your progress once the enemy catches you. That’s really frustrating, along with the bugs and glitches you have to come across while playing.

When it comes to the game’s controls, they are not perfect either, just like the game itself. However, once you practice often enough, they’re not much of a problem irrespective of the device you use to play Hello Neighbor. As for the replay value, you may have already guessed that it’s rather low. With all the way-too-difficult puzzles, overall lack of diversity, and constant setbacks to the very beginning, you simply lose interest in the game in the long run.

The Hello Neighbor game will amaze you with its brilliant replay-your-childhood-fears cinematic concept. At the same time, it will disappoint you with this concept’s poor execution. Needless to say that Hello Neighbor is too expensive for what it offers.

  • Bugs and glitches;
  • Overall sloppy execution feels unfinished;
  • Too pricey for what it offers.

Okay

On the one hand, the game creates a truly fantastic suspenseful atmosphere. On the other, the lack of logic and depth spoils all the fun — along with multiple bugs and glitches Hello Neighbor is filled with. Cutting to the chase, the game’s multiple drawbacks will ultimately make you want to leave the intriguing and mysterious storyline far behind you saying ‘Goodbye Neighbor’.
